Would You like to lighten your load while backpacking? Some hikers don’t mind carrying a little more weight, however, some desire a much lighter load. I will highlight, Ultralight Tents in this post and endeavor to answer the question that you may wonder about when it comes to using an Ultralight Tent.
Since the tent is lighter, am I giving up anything besides weight? For example, Since the tent is lighter, does it lack strength, in design or material, that will affect the ability to withstand the elements of the outdoors, to a reasonable degree?
Answer: Some well-made Ultralights can be quiet strong, and able to withstand the elements to a degree, of course, that could apply to any backpacking tent that can be purchased.
Please, let me explain. As a visitor to my website, I want to provide truthful and unbiased information. Some people prefer ultralight, however, they understand the tradeoff in doing so. For example, some ultralight gear ( including tents ) may not have the “wear quality ” that more conventional tents afford.
That being said, as far as the safety of an ultralight tent itself, there is no guarantee. Personally, I prefer a more conventional tent. The safety of your excursion may depend, on your skills in keeping yourself free of elements to the extent you can.
For example, you could avoid injury by not pitching your tent under a tree, thereby avoiding lighting that may strike the tree or a branch that could fall.
Survivalist or Backpacker
Many Backpacker’s pride themselves on their survivalist skills, no doubt, at least some of their skills are learned from experience out in the wilderness from situations that arise. Of course, learning from experience may not be the best or most beneficial way to learn skills that are needed in the out of doors.
For example, what about skills needed in dealing successfully with Hypothermia? Since Hypothermia can be life threating, one would do well in taking on the task of learning as much about the condition as possible and how to treat it. That type of training would better enable one to help someone that was suffering from hypothermia, due to emersion in cold water or being exposed to very cold weather for a time.
Well, what does this have to do with Ultralight Tents? Not a lot. It is difficult to envision an Ultralight Tent as the best place to warm someone who is suffering the condition of Hypothermia. Don’t get me wrong, Ultralight Tents have their place and time, and, are used widely, however, they may not be appropriate for everyone or every occasion.
