Practicality and Design
Weight of the Backpack itself: As has been highlighted in some of the other posts, your final weight is determined by individual items that you choose to take with you on Your trek, that includes, of course, your backpack itself, so lighting your load 1 pound or 1/2 pound or even 1/4 of a pound here and there can add up to a positive amount of weight for You to carry.
Comfort when worn. Without a doubt we want to feel comfortable wearing our Backpack while hiking, So, what do we look for in a pack that will help achieve that goal?
Size of the Backpack: In reading some reviews on a variety of backpacks I found that some people writing the reviews stated they had purchased the wrong size pack and they had to change out for the right size, so in choosing Your backpack, keep in mind Your size- small, medium or large. Acquiring the size pack that fits You is an important step in the process of choosing one that will be comfortable.
If you already know Your size that’s great! How though, do you determine Your size if that is not the case?
MEASURING TO DETERMINE YOUR SIZE BACKPACK.
It’s not your height that dictates the size backpack that’s best for you. It is Your Torso Lenth that determines your pack size. You will need someone to help You measure. With a tape measure in hand( one that is made from the soft flexible material if possible ) start your measurement.
1- IN A STANDING POSITION BEND YOUR NECK SLIGHTLY UNTIL THE BONY KNOT SHOWS AT THE VERY BASE OF YOUR NECK, YOUR MEASUREMENT WILL BEGIN THERE. NOW, ASSUME YOUR NORMAL POSITION WITH YOUR NECK.
2- PLACE YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HIPS ( BE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE ON THE TOP OF YOUR HIPS), AS THIS IS WHERE THE WEIGHT OF YOUR PACK WILL BE. WITH YOUR THUMBS POINTING INWARD TOWARD YOUR SPINE.
3- NOW HAVE THE PERSON HELPING YOU, MEASURE DOWN ( STARTING AT THE BONY KNOT AT THE BASE OF YOUR NECK) AND ALONG YOUR SPINE TO YOUR THUMBS. THIS WILL BE THE LENTH OF YOUR TORSO.
KEEP IN MIND THAT SOME BACKPACK MANUFACTURES HAVE DESIGNED THEIR PACKS WITH SOME ADJUSTMENTS FOR TORSO LENTH AS WELL AS HIP BELT ADJUSTMENT, THAT HELP CUSTOMIZE YOUR PACK FOR A BETTER FIT AND COMFORT.
Having this measurement of your Torso size You can compare with the size chart of the backpack manufacturer of your choice.
